Measured properly, how much bigger is Ethiopia's economy than the old estimate?

is not new growth. It is the same economy, measured better.

Ethiopia's GDP has been rebased to 2017 EFY (2024/25): newer prices, fuller data, international standards.

Same year, two yardsticks

Switch the measurement of 2017 EFY (2024/25). The economy does not change. The yardstick does.

Ethiopia's place among Africa's largest economies

Newer prices and census data reveal activity that was always there. The dashed ring shows the old estimate.

7.7%

This is the growth figure. Real growth in 2018 EFY was 7.7%. The 59.2% is the gap between two measurements of the same year.

A new yardstick for the economy

Scroll through the three changes. Watch the yardstick move while the economy stays where it was.

  1. The old yardstick

The 2015/16 measurement used older prices and sample surveys, and missed much informal and digital activity. It put 2017 EFY GDP at 15.09 trillion birr.

  2. 1New base year

Prices and weights move from 2015/16 to 2024/25.

  3. 2Better data

Two national censuses capture informal mining, small factories, transport and mobile money.

  4. 3Global standards

SNA 2008 and ISIC Rev. 5, reviewed by the IMF.

Together: 24.03 trillion birr. The activity was always there. Now it is measured.

GDP is 1.59 times larger, so ratios like debt-to-GDP and tax-to-GDP fall by about 37%. The debt and the revenue themselves do not change.
